"La
Casa del Procurador" (The Solicitor's House) is an old
country house built in 1887 by the engineers of the Commuter
Railroad Company as a wedding gift for Don Lorenzo Muñoz Guardiola.
The workers of "El Chicharra" (The Cicada) - the
narrow gauge train that connected the towns of Alcoy, Villena,
and Yecla - thanked in this manner Don Lorenzo for his help
as court solicitor of Villena. The house was built with train
rails which gives a distinctive and peculiar look to the structure;
even the roof was made using crossbeams from the railway company.
Ever
since it was built, "La Casa del Procurador" has
been well known in the area, being Don Lorenzo a popular character
in Villena. He was the town mayor and the founder of the Farmers
Guild and the Villenense Club, both major institutions at
the time.
The
house sits on a 42,000-squared meter property, shaded by two
centennial eucalyptuses whose majestic presence contributes
to the peacefulness of the surroundings. It has been recently
renovated by Don Lorenzo's granddaughter and great-granddaughter,
who have taken the utmost care in preserving the original
flavor and atmosphere of the state.
"La
Casa del Procurador" is located in a big valley named
"Laguna Chica" (Small Lagoon) - evoking the lake
that existed there centuries ago - at the base of the Rock
of the Mosquito, next to the Castelar mountains. The proximity
of the Salinas mountain range, Peñarrubia, and Peñagolosa
offers nature lovers plenty of opportunities to explore this
unique setting. Moreover, the old railway track bed, close
to the property, has been turned into a path perfectly suited
for hiking or biking.
